For many people, it's a challenge to hear God's voice. Whether you're a person of already strong faith or are just feeling a desire to know more about God, spiritual direction is a place to find accompaniment and structure while you practice your faith.
Setting a Spiritual Direction Session
When you've decided to try spiritual direction, the first step is make an appointment. It's as easy as sending an email! Most directors (myself included) can be reached by email or phone. There's no danger in reaching out. We can see together if a session to discuss your spirituality and spiritual exercises would be good for you and schedule a meeting in person or online.
The Format of a Typical Session
The session is a place for prayer and discernment.
We always start with prayer to help both you and the spiritual director be open to the Holy Spirit and gaining wisdom from the meeting.
From there, the meeting is a conversation about your spirituality.
What is your relationship with God like now?
Do you pray regularly?
What is your prayer and worship life like?
Is there room for silence in your life?
What types of prayer do you practice?
If these questions are scary or you feel like you don't know how to answer them, that's okay. Spiritual direction might still be for you: every journey starts somewhere, whether that means you spend time with the Bible every day or you have a difficult relationship with God. As long as you want to know Him better, you should benefit from meeting with a spiritual director.
The Goals of Spiritual Direction
The ultimate goal is to deepen your relationship with God.
After years of clinical experience with mental health, I know that Jesus is the ultimate healer. God's love heals human hearts.
During spiritual direction sessions, you are invited to reflect on God's place in your soul. It is a space to understand your Faith better with the pastoral companionship of a spiritual director.
Fees of Spiritual Direction Sessions
Spiritual directors can set their own fees. I offer sessions for $50, and I recommend meeting about once a month. That frequency can help ground your path for spiritual formation.
May God bless your discernment for spiritual direction, and may the Holy Spirit guide your journey.
